GimpEVAL

Try safely the GIMP development release on live CD

GimpEVAL is a live CD helping people to test and play with unstable development versions of GIMP without installing anything and thus breaking their stable release of GIMP. GimpEVAL is based on Zenwalk Live edition on which development versions of GIMP and needed librairies were added as a module.

Versions: GimpEVAL-2.5.4 is based on Zenwalk Live Edition 5.2.0 and Gimp-2.5.4. The numbering used for GimpEVAL and GIMP are the same.

download

Download GimpEVAL-2.5.4.iso (594 Mo).

Alternatively if you already have the standard Zenwalk Live Edition you can only download the gimp25 module for Zenwalk Live (49 Mo). and the gimp-help-2 module for Zenwalk Live (32 Mo).

Using GimpEVAL

GimpEVAL-2.5.4.iso works exactly like Zenwalk Live Edition. Basically you must burn the iso file on a CD and then boot on it. It won't install anything on your computer just loading and running in memory. If you need more informations about how using this file, I encourage you to read the Zenwalk Live manual.

After booting and running GimpEVAL you just have to launch GIMP from the standard location. You must right-clic on the desktop and you'll find it in the Graphics submenu. Enjoy !

The new GIMP help navigator based on Webkit is available and can be used to read the local installation of gimp-help-2. Alternatively in GIMP preferences it's also possible to activate the online version of the help files.

Important : Note that you can not use the stable release of GIMP from GimpEVAL ! It is just intended to play with the development version of GIMP, not to use it seriously until a new stable release is out.

More technical infos...

To build this LiveCD, I did follow this steps :

  • build a package of iso-codes-2.0 (language codes)
  • build a package of babl-0.0.22
  • build a package of gegl-0.0.18
  • build a package of gimp-2.5.4
  • build a Zenwalk Live module called gimp-2.5.mo containing all the 4 previous packages
  • build a package of libsoup-2.4.0
  • build a package of gvfs-0.2.5
  • build a package of icu-3.6
  • build a package of sqlite3-3.5.9
  • build a package of gperf-3.0.3
  • build a package of WebKit-r35249
  • build a package of gimp-help-2.0.8
  • build a Zenwalk Live module called gimp-help-2.mo containing all the 7 previous packages
  • rebuild a Zenwalk Live base without gimp-2.4 and called 01-zenwalk-nogimp.mo
  • build a customized iso file of the Zenwalk Live with 01-zenwalk-nogimp.mo and by adding the gimp-2.5.mo module

That's it. I'll probably build a lighter version that can run from USB.
